- Title:
- Kurichi Kalyana Kothanadaramar temple
- Scope & Content:
-
The Kurichi Kalyana Kothanadaramar temple's Ardhamandapa ceilings are drawn with the 18th century murals. Artists belonging to the Maratha period painted them using herbal dyes depicting the scenes from Ramayana and other sacred epics. This temple is very unique. The 'Ramayana' story is narrated in the ceilings. The bottom of every panel carries a label inscription that are mostly illegible to read. The panels which depict the 'Ashram' of Bharadvaja; the performance of the 'Putrakameshti yaga'; the fainting Dasaratha; Rama, Lakshmana and Sita crossing the Ganges by boat; the fight between Vali and Sugriva; Rama aiming an arrow at Vali; and the coronation of Sugriva are the notable ones.
On the inner ceilings there are some portrait paintings of men and women who helped financially in the execution of these paintings.

- Kurichi is a Village in Tiruppanandal taluk of Tanjavur District of Tamil Nadu State. It is located 55 KM towards East from District head quarters Tanjavur. Kurichi is about 2 km from Tiruppanandal on the Kumbakonam - Thirupanandal - Kurichi - Pandhanainallur route. Kurichi is surrounded by T. Palur taluk in the west , Tiruvidaimarudur taluk in the South, Kuthalam taluk in the East and Kumbakonam taluk in the South. Kurichi also known as 'Kurichi-Visnupati' has a Visnu temple called as 'Kalyana Kothandarama' faces east, where Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman bless the devotees. This temple is very unique because of the rare art of Maratha era. There is a saying that based on the advice of Vasishta Maharishi, Kanva Maharishi brought Lord Rama from Papanasam near Kumbakonam to Kurichi. Another legend is that with the request of Hanuman, Lord Rama blesses the "Vanaras" the monkeys with ear ornaments at Kurichi. It has a Gopura on the eastern side, a Mahamandapa, an Ardhamandapa and the Garbhagriha. The Garbhagriha appears to have been built in the 14-15th centuries, while the Mahamandapa and the Gopura belong to the 17-18th centuries. There are some fragmentary inscriptions of 15th century characters on the walls of the Garbhagriha denoting the age of this temple. One of them seems to register a grant of land to Kshetrapala by an individual who was the son of Vayiravanayanar on his appointment as the temple accountant. An inscription probably of the 17th century runs over the 'Pidha' of the Kothandarama. The ceiling of the Mahamandapa or Ardhamandapa bears the mural paintings of Maratha style. These paintings depict the 'Ramayana' epic which was a very popular among the people as well as the artists in those days. It is similar to the 'Ramayana' story, painted in the Venugopala Parthasarathy temple in Chengam (North Arcot district) in the 17th century. The paintings in Kurichi are in the traditional Maratha colours such as dark green, red ochre and black. These paintings may be dated to the end of the 18th century. The 'Ramayana' story is narrated in sequence. The bottom of every panel carries a label inscription that are mostly illegible to read. The panels which depict the 'Ashram' of Bharadvaja; the performance of the 'Putrakameshti yaga'; the fainting Dasaratha; Rama, Lakshmana and Sita crossing the Ganges by boat; the fight between Vali and Sugriva; Rama aiming an arrow at Vali; and the coronation of Sugriva are finely executed. On the inner ceilings there are some portrait paintings of men and women who helped financially in the execution of these paintings. Over the head of each figure their name is written in colloquial language. They are Narayanan, Sabapathy Chetty, Balu Rengaraja, Renga Chettiar, Parvatham Acchi, Subbha Pillai, Abhirama Acchi, Kandasamy Pillai of Tiruchankadu and Valliammal Acchi. The person who was a member of the assembly is mentioned as 'Panchayattu Rama Pillai'. The man who worked as Karnam is called 'Karunam Sinivasa Ayyar' and the man who was the village headman "Pattamaniyam Guru Pillai". The name of the person who painted the panels is written as 'Varunakkara Balu Rengaraja Sevai Seykuran'. Below this label inscription his portrait is painted in a recumbent position of worship. On the western end of the ceiling there are some paintings seem that were executed with the financial help of a lady Avayammal Acchi of Tiruchi. Stylistically the paintings in this temple are more important and interesting since they represent 18th century Maratha style. he Kurichi Kalyana Kothanadaramar temple's Ardhamandapa ceilings are drawn with the 18th century murals.
