This is an illustrated manuscript containing selected poems from the Divan of Ali Shir Nava’i (844-906 AH/1441-1501 CE). As well as being a prominent statesman of considerable wealth, Nava’i (meaning ‘melody maker’) was a great poet and patron of the arts. He was a master of Chagatai and promoted its use as a literary language.
Nava’i's poetry in Chagatai was the most important aspect of his literary output and brought him great renown. One of Nava’i's most important works is the Khazaʼin al-ma‘ani (‘Treasuries of poetic meanings’), the final edition of his four divans which he arranged shortly before his death. These are entitled Gharaʼib al-sighar (‘The curiosities of childhood’), Navadir al-shabab (‘The marvels of youth’), Badaʼi‘ al-vasat (‘The wonders of middle age’), and Fava’id al-kibar (‘The advantages of old age’). Although they are said to correspond to the four stages of Navai’s life, the contents of each divan are not restricted to a particular period (For more see Subtelny, ‘ʿAlī Shīr Navāʾī’).
The present volume contains six archaistic miniatures of fair quality, on f 5r, 26r, 42v, 53v, and 68v, which must date from the late seventeenth or eighteenth century. They were probably added to the volume in Transoxania, although a northern provincial Iranian provenance is also possible. A small illuminated headpiece can be found f 1v. The work also contains some marginalia.
The volume does not include a colophon and is undated, however it was probably copied in the Bukhara region during the eleventh century AH/seventeenth century CE.
