Makhzan al-asrār - مخزن الاسرار
- Scope & Content:
-
A didactic poem in imitation of Niẓāmī’s Persian didactic Makhzan al-asrār. This copy differs considerably from the one found in Add MS 7914. In addition to lines added or omitted between the two texts, the order of the contents is also considerably different. A portion of the prologue, corresponding to ff 123r-124r in Add MS 7914, is found in an abridged format at the end of this manuscript.
There are also two lacunae, apparently due to the loss of some of the folios. The first consists of the eulogy of Sultan Iskender (ff 121r-123r in Add MS 7914). The second corresponds with ff 129r-133v in the latter manuscript and comprises the anecdote of Sulayman and the handful of clay, and the story of Sultan Mahmud and the old hermit.
From what remains of the colophon, we can see that this particular manuscript was copied by Ḥaydar Ṭalba.
This item features six illustrations covering nearly the entirety of the page, in Persian style (ff 2v, 8r, 11r, 20v, 24v, 27v). It features a detailed unvan, as well as illuminated borders and headings. The illustrations are mounted on tinted paper, alternately red, blue and green, with designs of flowers and animals in gold.
This volume was copied in Iran in the 10th century AH (16th century CE).
