This volume contains a narrative poem in Chagatai, largely legendary in character, on the military exploits of Sa‘d ibn Abi Vaqqas and other Companions of the Prophet, authored by one ‘Abd al-Rahim. This author is not mentioned in Hofman’s Turkish Literature, and the work appears to be rare. The title, as indicated in a note by C.S. Mundy, should perhaps be Fütuh al-İslam.
The poem opens with a series of na‘ts in praise of the Prophet and the first four Caliphs before the narrative. The valour and spirituality of Ali feature very prominently. From time to time the masnavi form of the narrative is interrupted by a quatrain or by a ghazal, mukhammas or musamman.
Begins:
Basmala va bihi nasta‘in va bik (sic) al-ibtida va ‘alayk (sic) al-muntaha ya Vahhat (sic) Bi-Bism-illah sözimnin ibtidasi * irir Zat-i qadim intihası
Ends:
‘Ata qıldıng Rahima tab‘-i (himmat?) * chahar shabih-i Qitmir qıldı Tammat
The present manuscript has lacunae after ff 9, 60, and 107, and is slightly defective at the end. The fragment attached to the front endpaper belongs with the fragmentary f 181, and contains the end of the work. There are numerous marginal emendations by the copyist, with the incorrect text generally being lightly struck through.
The colophon, which is in Persian, can be found on f 181v. It states that the copy was produced in Bukhara in 1258 AH/1842-3 CE.
