- Title:
- Account of attempted rescue expedition to the ice-bound 'Herzog Ernst' in Spitsbergen, February-March 1913, by Herbert F. Millar
- Scope & Content:
-
Day by day report of the unsuccessful expedition to the ice-bound Herzog Ernst ship in Sorger Bay (Sorgfjord) in Spitsbergen, by Herbert F. Millar, based in Kings Bay (Kongsfjord), and Kurt Wegener, polar explorer and meteorologist, leader of the German geophysical station at Cross Bay (Krossfjord), 21 February-29 March 1913.
Captain Alfred Ritscher, skipper of the Herzog Ernst, had left the stranded ship after the loss of the expedition’s leader, Herbert Schröder-Stranz, and travelled on foot to Longyearbyen to seek help. The German government requested Dr Wegener to get up an expedition, together with ‘M’s men’ in Kings Bay (probably men working for Ernest Mansfield and the Northern Exploration Company), to take supplies and bring back news of the ship. Millar agreed, and he and Wegener travelled with a small group for 36 days through unknown territory, dragging their sledge across the snow in gruelling conditions. They were forced to abandon the attempt and return to Kings Bay.
