- Title:
- [Two mesnevi by Şakir Mehmet Efendi]
- Scope & Content:
-
This volume contains the following two mesnevis composed by Şakir Mehmed Efendi, a poet who was born at the end of the 18th century CE and died in 1252 AH (1836 CE), according to information contained within the Tezkire of Fatin. The poet reflects 19th century developments within Classical Ottoman poetry, rather than the mahallileşme school, and was greatly influenced by Sufism.
(1) ff 1v-14v : Aşkiye Mesnevi: a poem usually referred to as the Mesnevi-yi Aşkiye, which bears considerable resemblance to Şeyh Galip's Hüsn ü Aşk. The poem features considerable variation in its aruz. The text is dated 1210 AH (1795 CE), although it is likely that this date refers only to the completion of the poem ;
(2) ff 15v-23v : Seyahat-i Dil: Another mesnevi bearing resemblance to Şeyh Galip's Hüsn ü Aşk. This work speaks of the poet's battles against the denigrating qualities of earthly beauty with the help of Allah's spiritual values and contains significant Sufi imagery. The text is undated.
The calligraphy of both poems is the same. On the last two pages of the manuscript are several additions made in a different hand, in both Arabic and Ottoman Turkish, in poetry and prose.
The manuscript has been mislabeled as the Divan-i Şakir Ahmet Paşa on f 1r. Underneath this, however, the title Divan-i Şakir Mehmet has been effaced but is still partially visible.
The manuscript was likely copied in the early 19th century.
