The scientific Archive of the IEFEM is the only and the oldest storage of data for the specific Bulgarian culture from the period of pre-industrial development until now. The Archive was established within the institution of the National Ethnographic Museum in Sofia in 1906. The recent collection was organised after 1944, and was based on the rest of the saved materials left after the bombardment of Sofia in January 1944. It contains today over 300 000 sheets of naratives, more than 40,000 photo documents and more than 400 art materials.
All the original materials are owned by the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of sciences, which is a successor of the former Ethnographic Institute with Museum at BAS.
Half of the materials are from the last quarter of the 19th century until the late 1920s; the latest and news materials are from the present day and reflect the culture of the beginning of industrialisation up to present days.
This digitised collection contains three sets of newly discovered, unique documents from the 19th century.
Arrangement: All arrangements made by the archivists at the Archive of the Institute for Ethnology and Folklore Studies with Ethnographic Museum, follow and preserve the order of the authors/creators/initial owners of the collections.
