Add MS 19804

This volume contains a collection of letters written by Veysi Efendi and some other writers. It begins with a letter by Şeyhi Efendi written back to İstanbul in order to announce Sultan Selim's conquest of Egypt in 923 AH (1517 CE). No other notice of the author has been found.

The letters have rubrics stating the names of the writers and, in some cases, also the persons addressed. Most of them are by Veysi Efendi, who died in 1037 AH (1627-28 CE) and whose letters have been collected. The letters are as follows:

(f 3r) Veysi to the Vezir Uveys Paşa, describing the drawbacks of the office of Kadı and asking to be released from it;

(f 8v) A letter of the same contents addressed to Nasuh Paşa, Grand Vezir (1020-23 AH/1611-15 CE);

(f 10v) A letter of similar contents addressed to the Şeyh-ül-İslam;

(f 10v) Abdülkerim Efendi, as Kadı of Bursa, to Veysi;

(f 23v) Veysi to an unnamed official;

(f 25r) Veysi to the Şeyh-ül-İslam;

(f 28v) Veysi to the Şeyh-ül-İslam Hocazade Mehmet (1015-24 AH/1606-15 CE);

(f 33r) Veysi to the Governor of Egypt;

(f 37v) Veysi to the Kapudan Paşa;

(f 40v) Veysi to an unnamed friend;

(f 43r) The Defterdar Bali Çelebi's dotless letter to the late Şehzade Sultan Selim ;

(f 45v) Similar letters by Kami Efendi;

(f 48v) Similar letters by Mehmet Efendi;

(ff 50v-62r) Other letters by Mehmet Efendi to the Hans of Crimea, to the Grand Vizier, to the Nakıb ul-Eşraf, and to other individuals.

The rest of the volume contains models of familiar letters, of letters from Ağas to Paşas, forms of petitions, receipts, tezkereler, etc.

The manuscript was likely copied and completed on the date found at the end of the work, Rebiülehir 1075 AH (October-November 1664 CE) and produced by the scribe who signed it, Mehmet İbn-i Mehmet İstanbuli.
