Scope & Content:

A manual by Badr al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad Sibṭ al-Māridīnī (بدر الدين محمد بن محمد سبط المارديني, b. 1423, d. after 1497) on the calculation of the movements of celestial bodies with arcminute precision. In an introduction, ten chapters and a conclusion (خاتمة, f. 19v), the text summarizes and simplifies an introductory work by al-Māridīnī's teacher, Aḥmad ibn Rajab Ibn al-Majdī (أحمد بن رجب بن المجدي, b. 1366, d. 1447) entitled Kashf al-ḥaqāʼiq fī ḥisāb al-daraj wa-al-daqāʼiq (كشف الحقائق في حساب الدرج والدقائق, see f. 2v, lines 10-12).

The copy also preserves extensive calculation tables (ff. 2r and 22v-25r).

F. 2r is stamped with ownership seals of Muṣṭafá Ṣidqī (مصطفى صدقي; see Provenance).

Condition: Minor smudges and stains. Manuscript enclosure contains old silk sewing thread and a narrow strip of paper. Marbled paper of binding is stuck onto leather covers

Marginalia: Numerous marginal and interlinear notes and calculations in black and red ink

Seals: f. 2r; British Museum stamps (ff. i-v, 2v and 25v)
