Yatīmat al-ʿaṣr fī al-madd wa-al-jazr يتيمة العصر في المد والجزر
Ibn Mīmī, ʿAbd al-Qādir ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī ابن مِيمي، عبد القادر بن أحمد بن علي
- Scope & Content:
-
A wide-ranging treatise on natural phenomena relating to the seas, by ʿAbd al-Qādir ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī ibn Mīmī al-Baṣrī (عبد القادر بن أحمد بن علي بن مِيمي البصري, d. 1674). The text, also known as Wary al-zand bi-al-jazr wa-al-madd (وري الزند بالجزر والمد), was composed in 1084/1673 and the present copy was completed, according to a colophon (see below, f. 122v, lines 15-16) in a different hand, in Baṣrah on 14 Jumādá II 1085 (6 September 1674). Folios 1, 2 and 41 are replacements.
The treatise describes the known seas and islands and their associated creatures and marvelous phenomena; seafaring; and the tides and theories concerning their cause. It also discusses various cosmological, astronomical, zodiacal, calendrical, and meteorological subjects and describes regional rivers, citing throughout numerous authorities including relators of hadīth, pre-Islamic philosophers and numerous scholars of the Islamic era.
Marginal notes on ff. 35r, 99v and 112r identify the author's frequently-mentioned shaykh (شيخنا) as the pre-eminent theologian and sufi Ibrāhīm ibn Haṣan al-Kūrānī al-Shahrazūrī al-Shahrānī (1616-1690), said to be Ibn Mīmī's personal teacher (وهو شيخ المؤلف).

بالجبال...
