- Title:
- [Bektaşi Texts]
- Scope & Content:
- This volume contains a compilation of eight tracts, most if not all of which appear to be connected with the beliefs and ceremonies of the Bektaşi Order of dervishes, a group whose doctrines combine elements of various Islamic traditions.
(I) 1v-5r: Düvazdeh Imam-i Hoca-i Nasir-i Tusi (sic), twelve supplicatory formulae, for invoking blessings on the Prophet Muhammad صلعم and the twelve Imams, preceded by a supplication for the meeting of one's own needs, in Arabic. The attribution to the Sh'ite scholar Naṣīr ed-Dīn Ṭūsī (died 672 AH/1274 CE) in the heading is improbable. Although a prolific author, Tusi is not known as a composer of such formulae;
(II) 5v-7r: [On dört Ma'sum], a brief tract enumerating the Fourteen Ma'sum, descendants of the Prophet Muhammad صلعم apart from the Imams who are held by Sh'ites to be immune from sin, and whose names, the author states, it is obligatory to know;
(III) 7v-13r: Haza Menakıb Hazret İmam Ca'fer Sadık, a description of the character and deeds of the Sixth Imam, Ca'fer us-Sadık (d. 148 AH/765 CE);
(IV) 13v-17r: Erkan-i İmam Ca'fer Sadık, a series of questions and answers relating to aspects of Islamic doctrine, Sufi thought, behaviour, ritual, etc. Ignorance of the correct answers, in the author's view, disqualifies one from the questioner's help or company. This tract is implausibly attributed to the Imam Ca'fer us-Sadık;
(V) 17r-23r: Bu bab tarkini beyan eder, a summary of the essentials of the theory of the mystical path, for aspirants to the Bektaşi Order. The text discusses the definition and meaning of Law (Şeriat), the Path (Tarikat), and Truth (Hakikat), and the basis and stages of the Path;
(VI) 23r-36v: Şükr-i minnet ve sipas ve dürer-i (sic) bi-payan, esoteric knowledge relating to the mystical path and its symbolism. Attributed to the fifth Imam, Muhammad el-Bakir (died circa 117 AH/735 CE);
(VII) 36v-37v: Der beyan-i teraş (sic), a description of ritual shaving (normally spelled teraş) of the beard and eyebrows, with Qur'anic phrases and supplicatory formulae to be recited. The name of Haccı Bektaş himself (7th AH/13th century CE) is mentioned in this text;
(VIII) 37v-38v: Der beyan-i çırak, a description of a Bektaşi ritual for the initiation of a novice, with emphasis on asking Divine forgiveness through the intercession of the Imams.
Throughout the text, the letters p and ç are written as b and c, and there are numerous errors of orthography.
The manuscript was copied in 1288 AH (1871 CE).
