The collection includes a heterogeneous corpus of records: documents regarding land rights and boundaries, lists of chiefs and acts, maps, court proceedings and judgements in civil, land and criminal remedies, as well as the financial administration of the Council. The documents span from the end of the 19th Century to the 2000s. The collection refers to the Lower Axim Traditional Area.
Initially the documents were kept in the Palace of the Omanhene, placed few metres far from the coastline in Axim. Because of sea breeze and recurrent floods that heavily damaged the archival materials during the past decades, the records were moved to a dedicated room within the Omanhene's private house, where they are currently kept.
Extent and format of original material: The collection consists of 119 files and volumes of varying sizes, sorted in 6 series.
It uses Latin script with Nzima phonetic characters.
Arrangement: Chronological order. Bound pages are in their original order. Copies at the end of the folder.
Access to some files in this collection is restricted. Consequently, the digital images for some files are not available on the EAP website. Please contact the EAP team to request access to those.
