Mawāniḥ al-uns bi-riḥlatī li-wādī al-Quds موانح الأنس برحلتي لوادي القدس
Luqaymī, Muṣṭafá ibn Aḥmad لقيمي، مصطفى بن أحمد
- Scope & Content:
-
Travel narrative composed in 1164/1751 by the Sufi poet and scholar Muṣṭafá Asʿad ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Dimyāṭī al-Luqaymī [or al-Laqīmī] (مصطفى أسعد بن أحمد بن محمد الدمياطي اللقيمي, 1694-1764). The title appears at f. 2r, lines 26-27. The paper used for the copy bears a watermark of a crowned shield with legend LIBERTAS on a banner and the word VORNO, indicating it was manufactured in Vorno, near Lucca, Italy, possibly at the Tegrimi paper mill. Many watermarked papers of this design are documented dating to the mid 18th century, with some earlier examples also recorded [see memoryofpaper.eu].
The text records the author's trip to Jerusalem, where he spent more than two months visiting shrines and the Ḥaram complex. He departed Damietta on 8 Dhū al-Qaʿdah 1143/15 May 1731 (see f. 2v, lines 7-8), and arrived back on 10 Jumādá I 1144/10 November 1731 (see f. 115r, lines 9-10).
The work is replete with digressions, poetry and excerpts from the writings of earlier writers of ziyārah and pilgrimage texts such as al-Suyūṭī (السيوطي, d. 1505) and ʿAbd al-Ghānī al-Nābulusī (عبد الغاني النابلسي, d. 1731).
Begins (f. 1v, lines 2-4):
الحمد لله الملك القدوس باعث لطائف النفوس شوقا لزيارة القدس المحروس
وأثار لها بالوجد أشجانا جدوا بالعزم المسير وشمروا عن ساق
الجد من غير تقصير...
Ends (f. 117v, lines 20-23):
...صلوة يفوح بالخافقين
عرف نشرها وينشر في الآفاق عبير عطرها ما مدح السفر
وحمد المقام وطاب الابتداء وحسن الختام
