Scope & Content:

Defective copy of a medical compendium tabulated in synoptic charts, by Zayn al-Dīn Abū Ibrāhīm Ismā‘īl ibn Muḥammad al-Ḥusaynī al-Jurjānī (زين الدين أبو إبراهيم إسماعيل بن محمد الحسيني الجرجاني, d. 1136). He is also known as Ismā‘īl ibn al-Ḥasan (إسماعيل بن الحسن) or Ismā‘īl ibn al-Ḥusayn (إسماعيل بن الحسين).

The complete work consists of two parts (قسمان): part one on theoretical medicine, in three books (كتاب), and part two on treatment of diseases. The text is presented in tables, variously including headings such as causes (أسباب), nature (ماهية، صفة), indications (علامات), symptoms and diagnostic tests (الدلائل والمدلولات), types (أنواع), regimen (تدابير), and treatment (العلاج).

The present volume is missing the first book of part one, and opens with the entry on the stomach (معدة) from the second subsection (قسم) of the second book (on anatomy) of part one.

The final leaf (f. 96) is the volume’s only remaining folio following the incomplete ninth chapter (مقالة) of the second section (قسم). It bears text from the ninth section on ulcers of the kidneys and urinary system (الباب التاسع في القرحة في الكلية وجميع آلات البول, f. 96r) from the seventeenth chapter (مقالة) of part two (القسم الثاني).

There are blank, unfoliated leaves between ff. 86 and 87 and between ff. 94 and 95.

  • The fourth chapter on conditions of the nose (المقالة الرابعة في أحوال الأنف, ff. 78r-79v);
  • The fifth chapter on conditions of the mouth, lips, tongue and teeth (المقالة الخامسة في أحوال الفم والشفة واللسان والأسنان, ff. 80r-84r);
  • The sixth chapter on conditions of the throat and larynx (المقالة السادسة في أحوال الحنجرة والحلق, ff. 84r-86r);
  • The seventh chapter on diseases of the lungs such as coughing, consumption and pneumonia (المقالة السابعة في أمراض آلات التنفس من السعال والسل وذات الرئة, ff. 86r-89r);
  • The eighth chapter on diseases of the heart (المقالة الثامنة في أمراض القلب, ff. 89v-90v);
  • The ninth chapter on diseases of the oesophagus and stomach (المقالة التاسعة في أمراض المريء والمعدة , ff. 91r-95v [incomplete]);
