Scope & Content:

A manual on dream interpretation and a commentary on it added to the margin, both by Shihāb al-Dīn Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad ibn ʻAbd al-Raḥmān al-Maqdisī (شهاب الدين أبو العباس أحمد بن عبد الرحمن المقدسي, d. 1297 or 1298 [697 AH]), also known as Ibn Surūr (ابن سرور) and Ibn Niʿmah (ابن نعمة).

The present copy lacks the end of the commentary due to paper trimming, but the in-line commentary in another, later, copy (Cairo, Dār al-Kutub, Khidiwīyah 85, ff. 92-138) clarifies that its author is also the author of the main text [see Ibn Surūr, Aḥmad ibn ʻAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʻAbd al-Munʻim ibn Niʻmah ibn Sulṭān, Qawāʼid tafsīr al-aḥlām al-musammá "al-Badr al-munīr f'ī ʻilm al-taʻbīr" wa-sharḥuh, ed. by Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad Jumʻah (Bayrūt: Muʼassasat al-Rayyān, 1461/2000), image on p. 32].

The copy was completed within the lifetime of the author, on Tuesday, 28 Ramaḍān 695/30 July 1296 by an un-named scribe (see colophon, transcribed below, f. 111r, lines 7-9). A note added after the colophon, dated 12 Rabīʿ II 709/19 September 1309 records that the volume was studied closely (نظر في هذا الكتاب حسب الإمكان) by one Junayd ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Tawakkilī (جنيد بن عبد الله التوكلي, f. 111r, lines 9-12). He was possibly responsible for adding the commentary text, which was done after the lifetime of the author.

F. 1av, containing the beginning of the text, is a replacement in a different hand. The work consists of fourteen introductory sections (فصل, ff. 4v-16r), followed by fifteen chapters (باب, ff. 16r-111r) enumerated in the contents list (ff. 3r-4v) and themselves divided into sections or parts (قسم).
