Meghamālā

Language(s): Sanskrit
Title: Meghamālāa course of meteorological observations on clouds and rain, and astrological predictions derived from the form and colour of clouds, and their appearance in different seasons.
In the colophons of the Oxford Ms. (Hultsch Coll.) collated by Dr. Macdonell, the treatise is throughout called Raudrī Meghamālā (iti śrīraudrīmeghamālāyāṃ ॰), in the present Ms. the same title (or rather Raudrimeghamālā) is given to it in the colophons on fol. 24r and from fol. 28v; whilst on the others it is either called (śrī-Maghādevakṛtā, fol. 4r) Māheśvarī Meghamālā, or simply Meghamālā. According to Oxford Ms., the treatise would seem to form part of the Gargasaṃhitā.
Like Tantric works, it is composed in the form of dialogues between Śiva and Pārvatī, whilst Garga and Indra also appear as interlocutors.
Rather incorrect.
The treatise is divided into 24 sections (adhyāy, foll 13r, 40v, and throughout the Oxf. Ms.) which are not numbered in the present Ms., but are so in the Oxf. one.
At the end of ch. 17 (fol. 34v) the present Ms. gives two vernacular (Gujaratī) verses, introduced by atha bhadulivākyāṃ | which are wanting in the Oxf. Ms., and these are again followed by 3 verses introduced by garga uvāca|
While some of the Meghamālās (cf. Cat. Cat.) ascribed to different authors in the various lists of Mss. (Mahādeva, Śiva, Aindrī) will probably be found to be identical with the present treatise, the Florence Ms. (Aufrecht, Flor. Mss., no. 337) at all events seems to contain a different work.
In the Oxf. Ms. the text seems to proceed somewhat further, its final verses and colophon are different.
