This Purāṇa is classed as one of the 18 Mahāpurāṇas. See H.H.Wilson, Viṣnupurāṇa (2nd ed.), i., pp. lxxvi. seqq. Cf. Aufrecht, Cat. Bodl., no. 43; where the contents of the cantos are given.

The work has been edited, in the Bibl. Ind., by Nīlmaṇi Mukhopādhyāya. It there consists of two parts of 53 and 45adhyāyas respectively; the second part again consisting of Īśvara(or Īśa)-gītā (adhy.1-11) and the Vyāsagītā(12-45). In the present Ms. the Īśagītā consists of 10 adhyāyas, adhys. 5 and 6 being taken as one and the chapters of the Vyāsagītā no. 20 is omitted; whilst adhy. 34 etc. are wrongly numbered 35 etc.; and adhy. 38 of the edition is broken up into 2 chapters(39 and 40); so that 47 adhyāyas are counted in the second part.

Four scribes have contributed to the production of this copy; the first and least careful, hand reaching as far as fol. 24, and the second from there to fol. 50; a third hand wrote foll. 51-63 of the first, and the whole of the second part; and the remaining portion of the first part, foll. 64-104, is in a fourth hand, decidedly the best of the four in respect of accuracy.
