- Title:
- The Plane of the Towne and Mole of Tanger Discovering by ye little square Dott's the Mines which were made in ye Upper and Yorke Castle and Round the Towne By ye Rt. Honble the Ld Dartmouth for its demolishment.
- Scope & Content:
-
A manuscript map of the town of Tangier, produced by the military engineer Thomas Phillips as part of the English mission to evacuate and destroy the town in 1683-4. The mission was led by George Legge, 1st Baron Dartmouth, accompanied by his secretary Samuel Pepys, whose journal records the mission, and Phillips.
To destroy the town, mines were placed around the defences and mole and detonated. These are marked on the map as small black squares, The map key marks up 34 separate features of the plan as being either demolished and blown up, blown up, dismantled, or subsequently taken by Moroccan forces.
A projected new defensive work (no. 4 in the key) is marked, suggesting that the map was not originally intended to show the plan for the town’s destruction. This is supported by a suggestion that the purpose of the Dartmouth mission was not made clear to the participants until after they set sail for Tangier in August 1683, and further supported by the large key on the left of the map which has been drawn over pre-existing information.
