Manuscript account of a trading expedition to the Klondike in 1898 by Arthur Waller from Southampton, extracted from his diary. Waller and companion George Warin travelled to Canada early in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush, with the goal of making their fortunes trading food and other goods to prospectors.
Title page: ‘A Trip to Klondyke by A. Waller 1898. From January 4th 1898 to November 3rd 1898 … Extracts from the original diary made by A.W. Southampton February 1942’.
p. 1-86: Introduction and account of journey to Dawson City, Yukon, by steamer and rail from Liverpool to Skeguay (Skagway), then travelling on foot, by sled and boat up the Yukon River to Dawson City, in often hazardous conditions, from January to June 1898. Arrival at Dawson, setting up shop and starting to trade when the first visitors arrive by steamer from St Michaels on the Baring Sea.
p. 87- 96: ‘Three months at Dawson, June to Sept 1898’. Description of life in the rapidly expanding town over the summer, business, prices, prospecting, observations on hospitals, missions, prison labourers, etc.
p. 97-106: ‘Dawson City to Southampton’. Account of journey back along the river by paddle steamers, journey on the newly built ‘Arctic Railway’ to Skagway, return to Southampton via Seattle and New York.
p. 107-108: ‘Names of some of the boats I saw at Dawson City’.
