- Title:
- News dispatch about Japan dictated by Lord Northcliffe in Shanghai, a few months before his death in 1922
- Scope & Content:
-
f. 1: Typescript description and presentation, signed by Don Patterson. Transcript: ‘The foregoing news dispatch is one that was dictated at my request by Lord Northcliffe, Cecil Harmsworth, during his tour of the Far East in the Spring of 1922, a few months before his death. Northcliffe was somewhat bitter against the Japanese at this time and saw in the recent visit of the Prince of Wales a gesture toward a renewal of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance. He was alive with his usual nervous energy at the time this dispatch was written and was enroute to the Custom Jetty in Shanghai to take the ship for his return to the Continent when it was given out. At the time … I was correspondent in Shanghai and for China of the Chicago Tribune and the Tribune Syndicate. The corrections in pencil which make the manuscript valuable – are those of Northcliffe. [signed] Don D Patterson. Presented to the School of Journalism Columbia., Missouri July 28, 1924’.
ff. 2-6: Text of dispatch dictated by Lord Northcliffe. Double spaced typescript, with pencil corrections attributed to Lord Northcliffe. Pages numbered 1 to 5. Reports intense Chinese interest in the [Washington Naval] conference, preparations in Japan for the visit of the Prince of Wales, views on Japanese politics and Japanese propaganda.
