Manuscript journal of the military campaign in Flanders, from August 1793 to February 1796, attributed to Lieutenant Colonel James Russell of the Royal Dragoons. Lacks first folio (pp. 1-2). Contents:
- Narrative of events. pp. 3-57.
- ‘Song written on the engagement of the 26 April 1794’ (Battle of Beaumont, for which the Royal Dragoons were granted battle honours). Starts: ‘Twas on the heights of Cateau / In camp as there we lay / On the twenty-sixth of April / it was that glorious day’. 8 unnumbered pages.
- ‘Reference’ (i.e. an index). 6 unnumbered pages, followed by a blank page.
With a file of later notes by the writer’s descendants:
- Research notes on James Russell (d. Feb 1856) and others, and on the Royal Dragoons, the ‘Fighting Brigade’ and the ‘Union Brigade’.
- Dedication ‘To Arthur with love from Pater – your Gr. Grandfather’s Diary James Russell, late Royal dragoons from 1793 to 96. The first two pages were missing when sent to me’.
- Miniature portrait of James Russell, apparently at an older age, in an oval frame, ca. 85 x 70 mm.
