- Title:
- The ordination of Prince Nanda and his bride
- Scope & Content:
-
Painting of a scene from the life of the Buddha concerning the episode of Prince Nanda, the younger half-brother of the Buddha. Nanda was to be married to the beautiful young Janapada Kalyani, but after he listened to the teachings of the Buddha (Dhamma) he decided to leave his bride and follow the Buddha and to ordain as a bhikkhu. Janapada Kalyani thought that without marriage there was nothing significant for her to pursue, therefore she decided to become a bhikkhuni and follow the Buddha as well. Upon hearing the Buddha’s discourse on the decomposition of the body (Kayavicchandika Sutta) she gained knowledge about the impermanence of beauty and the human body and progressed spiritually so that finally she became an arahant (perfected person).
In the bottom right corner of the painting, one can see Buddha preaching to Nanda who kneels down in front of the Buddha and one of his disciples respectfully. In the next scene, Nanda is shown readily dressed for his wedding, but turning away from his bride and leaving her and her attendant behind to become a monk. Within the temple walls, there are ordinary people and royals as well as a group of bhikkhuni in white robes whom Janapada Kalyani would finally join. Above the temple, hovering in the air, are deva and withayathorn (students of magic science) witnessing this event.
Painting in Thai Rattanakosin style, water based paints on linen, from Central Thailand.
