- Title:
- Gerald Brenan: History of Poor Robinson. Manuscript draft
- Scope & Content:
-
Manuscript draft of The History of Poor Robinson, by Gerald Brenan (c. 1925), a satire or roman à clef based on Brenan’s relationship with Dora Carrington. With a later preface, revisions, additions and deletions, including some inserted pages in typescript (c. 1965).
Contents:
ff. 1-2: Manuscript preface headed ‘A note on ‘The History of Poor Robinson’. Describes the circumstances of its composition in 1925, with a key to the characters. In it Brenan explains that the manuscript had been written for himself alone, and remained un-read until this point, when he had corrected it and his wife (Elizabeth Gammell (Gamel) Woolsey) had typed it up (c. 1965). Final folio of the preface is written on the back of a recycled typescript draft of another work (opening: "Vicky O'Rourke, a large rather florid woman...").
f. 3: Typed title page with corrections. Annotations at head of title page: ‘Copy No. 1’ and ‘G.B.’. Key to characters on verso, crossed out.
ff. 4-98: Text of novel, manuscript and typed with autograph corrections, written on the rectos of loose folios (84 manuscript, 11 typed folios). Folios numbered 1-15, 15a, 16-22, 22a, 23-26, 26a, 26b, 27-28, 28b, 29-30, 30a, 31-36, 36a, 37-38, 38a, 39-48, 48a, 49, 49a, 49b, 49c, 50-55, 55a, 56, 56a, 57-63, 63a, 64-98.
f. 99: Manila folder inscribed by Brenan: "The History of Poor Robinson by Gerald Brenan’.
