ff. 1-11. Autograph working manuscript, in pencil, of ‘4 Songs from the British Isles’ (originally ‘Islands’). Arrangements of four traditional songs for SATB voices by Michael Tippett, as follows:
(1). ff. 5-6. ‘England. Early One Morning’
(2). ff. 6-8. ‘Ireland. Lilliburlero’
(3). ff. 8-9. ‘Scotland. Over the Sea to Skye’
(4). ff. 10-11. ‘Wales. Gwendoleen's Repose’
Composed around 1956/1957. The third song (‘Over the Sea to Skye’) was eventually dropped and replaced by ‘Poortith cauld’ (see Add MS 61775) in the set as published by Schott Music in 1957. This manuscript was found in the Schott offices in 2002 and 'Over the Sea to Skye' was published for the first time then (see G.1277.nn.(10)).
Together with a typed letter of presentation to Bryn Jones (ff. 1-2), signed by the composer and dated ‘Corsham, 22 September 1964’.
