- Title:
- Daikō ekikai gyokuhen 大廣益會玉篇 [大広益会玉篇]
- Scope & Content:
-
Author/compiler: GU Yewang (梁) 顧野王, 519-81, (compiler of the original Yupian 玉篇) ; revised by CHEN Pengnian (宋) 陳彭年, 961-1017.
Imprint: N.p. [Kyōto ?] , Shūdon 宗鈍, Keichō 9, 1604. Kango following maki 30 ends: 慶長九甲辰夏五月日 / 鐵山叟宗鈍漫書其後〓.
Description: Previously bound in 1 vol. western style, now reconstituted in 5 satsu. Blockprint. Printing frame 215 x 137 mm. Double-line borders with fishtail designs on hanshin.
Original mid-brown front and back covers of satsu 1-4, with original printed title slips on satsu 1-3. Title slip missing from satsu 4; handwritten gedai. Renewed covers and title slip on satsu 5, with manuscript gedai. Printed gedai of satsu 1-3 reads: Gyokuhen 1 no 3 玉篇一之三 (四之九, 十之十六). Hashiragaki: Gyoku 玉 + maki no. + folio no. In a new chitsu case.
Manuscript gedai, Tetsuzan gyokuhen 鐵山玉篇, pasted inside front cover of satsu 1. A letter from Sir Ernest Satow to Samuel Birch, Keeper of Oriental Antiquities at the British Museum, dated 7 April 1868, is bound in at the head of satsu 1. It informs Birch that Satow is sending him this volume as proof that Japanese and Chinese printed books may “exceed a century in age”, and gives a short description of the book (quoting the date of publication mistakenly as Keichō 6, 1601).
Edition: The first edition of this work. Preceded by many editions in China (Song, Yuan and Ming periods) and by a Japanese Gozan-ban edition of uncertain date, probably Nanbokuchō period. This edition, published in Keichō 9 (1604), was closely modelled on a Yuan edition dated 至正丙午 (1366).
Contents: An early Chinese dictionary, based on the Shuowen 説文 and arranged under 542 radicals. Enlarged by Sun Qiang 孫強 in the Tang period and revised by Chen Pengnian in the Song.

- Physical Characteristics:
-
Condition: Generally good, but with some water staining and worm damage, notably in satsu 5 (maki 19-30). Text of maki 19-22 is repeated in satsu 4 and 5. Satsu 5 appears to be a made-up volume containing, untypically, maki 19-30.
Impression: Blocks show little sign of wear, except in satsu 5 which is of a later impression.
Seals of ownership:Red oblong seal, Katsushika bunko 勝鹿文庫 on first page of satsu 1 and last page of satsu 5. Also red seal, Matsumoto-shi toshoin 松本氏圖書印 on fly-leaf or first printed page of each satsu. Both are seals used by Matsumoto Yukihiko 松本幸彦, late Edo period.
Manuscript notes: Handwritten list of contents, with kanji outlined in red, at head of all 5 satsu.
