Imprint: [Kyōto] , Joan Sōken (or Shūken) 如庵宗乾, Keichō 8,1603. Kanki on last folio verso reads: 惟時慶長第八昭陽單閼仲秋日 ／ 日東洛城 如庵宗乾模行.
Description: 2 kan, 1 satsu, rebound in 1 vol. western style. ff. 90. 271 x 193 mm. Fukurotoji.
Movable type. printing frame 229-232 x 167 mm. Single-line borders all round. No vertical rules. 'Flower petal' fishtail design on hanshin.
Kanbun text, with manuscript kunten, kaeriten, kutōten and shubiki added, probably not long after date of publication. 9 lines to page, 17 characters to line.
Renewed mid-blue covers, within a western style half-leather binding. Renewed title slip with manuscript gedai (probably in the hand of former owner Kojima Naozane) : Honzō jorei Keichō hachinen Joan Sōken mokan genpon 本草序例 慶長八年如菴宗乾模刊原本. Title from naidai at head of text on fol. 11. Hashiragaki: Jorei 序例 + folio no.
Edition: A movable type edition, printed from the same font of large-sized type as the Bunroku 5 (1596) edition, also published by Joan Sōken. Type re-set for the present edition, which has 9 lines to the page against the Bunroku 5 文禄五年 edition's 8 lines, and consists of 90 folios in all (92 folios in the earlier edition). These editions were followed by other movable type editions, using type of smaller size, with kanki dated Keichō 14 (1609), Keichō 17 (1612), Genna 6 (1620), all published by Baiju 梅壽, and Genna 2 (1616), published by Seki Kichiemon 關吉衞門.

Condition: Fair. Some worm damage (repaired) and much brown discoloration and damage to page corners, especially at beginning and end.
Impression: Type shows some evidence of wear and also unevenness in inking. A few passages are printed inkoku (white on black) which must denote blockprinting. Original kango on fol. 8b is also blockprinted.
Seals of ownership:Oblong red seal (faded) on first and last folios, Kojima-shi toshoki 小島氏圖書記 (seal of Kojima Naozane 小島尚眞).
Manuscript notes: Note following kanki on last folio reads: 天保壬寅九月十日宿於吉田時及灯 ／ 萱生友是□ [=巻?] 馳使見贈. Rebinding note on mikaeshi of back cover reads: 癸卯中秋既望重装成.
