Drawings of fish executed in a variety of techniques. Items 48 and 135 are the only exceptions, being two proof stage engravings of various types of fish. All drawings are executed on paper and pasted down on the folios of the manuscript.
Several drawings bear inscriptions in English and Latin in pencil or in ink, indicating the name of the fish, sometimes providing cross-references to books on the topic, including Francis Willughby, De Historia piscium libri quatuor (Oxford, 1685-86) and the works of John Johnston and Guillelmus Rondeletus. Various drawings were annotated in pen and ink by Hans Sloane himself (items 19, 22, 26, 63, 66, 70, 79, 85, 94, 101-106, 108, 111, 112, 116, 121, 123). Some drawings are signed and / or dated. Summary description of contents:
38. Ink and wash drawing of a 'goldfinny' fish, accompanied by a manuscript description signed 'George Jago'.
47. Pen and ink drawing of a fish found near the island of Terceira, Portugal, accompanied by a manuscript description in English, titled 'The portraiture of a fish found about the island of Tercera May 30th 1724'.
48. Letter to Reverend George Jago written by James Petiver, dated 30 December 1712, followed by the response to the letter written by G. Jago. The second leaf of item 48 has a print of seven fish on the verso inscribed in brown ink at the top ‘Fishes lately discovered on the coasts of Cornwal by the Reverend Mr. George Jago’.

- The manuscripts of Sir Hans Sloane were purchased at his death from his executors by the Act of Parliament which established the British Museum in 1753.

- The Sloane Manuscripts were held by the British Museum Department of Manuscripts until 1973 after which they were transferred to the British Library.

- Catalogue of Additional Manuscripts, vol. 21 (1832), available in the Manuscripts Reading Room, where the volume is described as: ‘Drawings of Fish, in colors by Mr. Catesby, Mr Edwards, the Rev. Geo. Jago, and others (151. in number.) This volume and the last appear to have been part of the collection of Mr. James Petiver, from whom at Art. 48. is a letter to Mr Jago, dat. 30. Dec. 1712. and Mr Jago’s reply, dat. Morvall in Cornwall, 3d. Jan. Oblong Folio’.
