Drawings of birds with inscriptions in Hans Sloane's and Thomas Browne's hand

Drawings of birds executed in a variety of techniques and by different draughtsmen. The only exceptions are items 82, 91 and 93, which are prints of birds. The drawings are executed on paper and pasted onto the folios of the manuscript. Many drawings bear inscriptions in Hans Sloane's and / or Sir Thomas Browne's hand, indicating the name of the bird and commenting on characteristics of the sketches. Summary description of contents:
1-20. Watercolours of birds on rectangular sheets of paper, with a blue washline along the margins.
21. Painting of a bird in two positions, on canvas.
22-23. Red chalk drawings of birds with inscriptions recording the name of the bird in English and Latin.
24-25. Pencil and ink and wash studies of peacocks and other birds, with indication of their colours pencilled in Dutch.
26-28, 31. Drawings of dead birds on blue paper inscribed by Hans Sloane, sent to him by Thomas Browne, with cross-references to specific plates in Francis Willughby's Ornithologiae libri tres (London, 1676 first ed.).
32-61. Red and black chalk and pencil drawings of birds with their name inscribed by Hans Sloane in English and Latin.
62, 64, 67. Pencil drawings of birds sent from Thomas Browne, one of which is dated 1669.
82. A la poupée etching of a duck.
83-89. Drawings of bones of various birds, inscribed by Hans Sloane and sent by Thomas Browne.
91, 93. Two hand-coloured prints of birds from Fort Saint George, Madras [Chennai] sent to James Petiver by surgeon Edward Bulkley and included as plates in John Ray's Synopsis methodica avium & piscium (London, 1713).
96-105. Watercolours of birds.
113. Chalk sketch of a dead bird on blue paper, inscribed by Hans Sloane on the recto and by Thomas Browne on the verso.
116. Ink and wash drawing of the seabird called booby, with handwritten description in English, signed 'H. G. fecit'.
124. Watercolour of a dead bird over prepared ochre paper with an inscription in Hans Sloane's hand, sent by Thomas Browne.
128-136. Chalk sketches and watercolours of birds, several of which have inscriptions by Thomas Browne.
134. Watercolour of a bird on canvas laid down on paper.

- The manuscripts of Sir Hans Sloane were purchased at his death from his executors by the Act of Parliament which established the British Museum in 1753.
