"A book containing herbs, flowers, trees, either growing wild or cultivated in gardens in England..."
- Scope & Content:
-
Watercolours of flowers, plants, fruits birds and insects made around 1684. The drawings are executed directly onto the folios of the manuscript, in all cases but one only on the recto. Foliation is original and visible in the upper right corner of the folios, inscribed in pen and brown ink.
The drawings are introduced by a manuscript title page inscribed in pencil with the words "A book containing herbs, flowers, trees, either growing wild or cultivated in gardens in England especially near London with severall birds and insects. All painted after the life in their naturall colours by ___ about the year MDCLXXXIV".
A pencil underdrawing is visible underneath the gouache and watercolour used to paint the specimens. From folio 121 onwards, the drawings are accompanied by an inscription in pencil, indicating the name of the plant in Latin, English or Dutch. The album opens with a sequence of watercolours of cultivated and wild flowers (ff. 1-73 and ff. 107-120), followed by branches of plants (ff. 74-98), fruit trees (ff. 99-105), plants with flowers, berries or pine cones (ff. 122-159). At the end of the manuscript are watercolours of birds (ff. 188-189 and ff. 194-195) and of butterflies and other insects (f. 186). Different from the rest of the drawings are two watercolours of a male and female peacock, which are drawn against a proportional grid (ff. 191v-192r).
