"Regum Daniae effigies ex Aulaeis Croneburgicis maxima ex parte depictae". An album of drawings of Danish kings.
- Scope & Content:
-
Pen and ink drawings of Danish Kings, starting with King Dan. I and concluding with King Christian IV. The volume formerly belonged to Olaus Wormius, whose autograph ('sum Olai Wormii') it bears on f. 1. The drawings are executed directly on the folios of the manuscript, mostly on both recto and verso. The original foliation in pen and ink can still be seen on recto and verso of all folios. The drawings are surrounded by epigrams in Latin attributed to Jonas Venusinus and inscriptions in Danish. On f. 1, a manuscript title page in Latin introduces the contents of the album as: "Regum Daniae effigies ex Aulaeis Croneburgicis maxima ex parte depictae […] Epigrammata Latina adjecta, sunt M. Jonae Venusini …" On the verso of f.1 is a manuscript list of 99 kings portrayed in the manuscript. Different from the rest of the manuscript are three engraved portraits of Danish kings interleaved among the folios of the manuscripts. These are:
f. 51*. Portrait of King Frederik I (r. 1533-34) in profile view facing left; engraving. Dimensions: 165 x 117 mm (sheet).
f. 52*. Portrait of King Frederick II of Denmark and Norway (r. 1559-1588), signed 'H. Goltzius sculp. G. Cornelij excud.'; engraving. Part of the lettering is written in pen and ink in Latin. Dimensions: 240 x 165 mm (platemark). Another impression of this print is in the British Museum (1854,0708.11).
n.n. (between f. 52* and f. 53). Portrait of King Christian IV of Denmark and Norway (r. 1588-1648), signed 'Simon de Pas sculpsit'; engraving. Dimensions: 315 x 195 mm (sheet). The small portraits in roundels around the portrait of the King have been cut out. An impression of the same print (including the roundel portraits) is in the British Museum (1848,0911.682).
