Watercolours of insects by Eleazar Albin and others
- Scope & Content:
-
Watercolours of butterflies, moths, caterpillars and other insects by Eleazer Albin, many of which related to his publication A Natural History of English Insects (London, 1749). The drawings are executed on paper and, occasionally, on parchment, and all are pasted on the folios of the albums. An inscription in Sloane's hand introduces the drawings as 'English insects drawn by Eleazar Albin and published in his History of English Insects with some few other drawn by him, but not published in the said History'. The name of the insect is inscribed in English on most drawings, along with a cross-reference to the corresponding plate in Albin's work.
1-126. Watercolours of insects later published in Albin's Natural History of Insects, some dated between 1711 and 1719. They bear inscriptions in English indicating the name of the insect and a cross-reference to the corresponding table in Albin's publication.
127-154. Watercolours of insects by Albin, not included in his Natural History of Insects, as indicated by an inscription in Sloane's hand on top of the folio where items 127-129 are pasted.
155-164. Watercolours of insects all by the same hand, possibly by Chinese artists, the first of which is inscribed by Sloane as 'Insects done in China'.
165-183. Watercolours of moths and butterflies, several of which are inscribed as (from?) 'Guinea'.
185. Ink and grey wash drawing of two butterflies signed 'Ev. Kikius f.' (Everhard Kickius).
188. Watercolour of a moth, with the wings seen from the front and the rear, signed 'Albin fecit 1713'.
189. Watercolour of a beetle signed 'H.B.' (Likely the monogram of 18th century Dutch artist Anton Henstenburg).
213, 216. Watercolours of insects, inscribed 'e picturis D. Tovey'.
218. Ink and grey wash sketch of two insects, dated 2 September 1700.
220-284. Watercolours of butterflies and other insects seen in Mauritania (Africa), introduced by an inscription in Sloane's hand as 'Papiliones & Insecta a' Iesreele Jones in Mauretania observata'.
285-302. Watercolours of insects by Albin with their name inscribed in English, introduced by an inscription in Sloane's hand 'English Insects by El. Albin, not in his History' [i.e. Albin's Natural History of Insects].
