Costume album with Persian and Turkish Officers of State with their wives and other women
- Scope & Content:
-
109 drawings, the vast majority watercolours depicting costumes of mostly Persian and Turkish officers of state. Some of the drawings bear the name of the depicted figure handwritten in pen in Italian. There are red-bordered strip labels pasted below most of the drawings, handwritten in English. All drawings are executed on paper and pasted onto the folios of the album. In the case of items 1-14, the human figure has been cut out, pasted on a rectangular sheet of paper, which in turn is pasted on the folio of the album. Different from the rest of the drawings in the album are:
91. Ink and grey wash drawing of a man with a turban in profile.
94. Watercolour of a Turkish woman with inscription in English by Edward Browne; similar drawings of figures in traditional costumes with Browne's notes are in Add MS 5234.
97. Pencil drawing of a seated man wearing a turban.
For other albums from Sloane's collection with a similar use of red-bordered labels describing the drawings, see Add MS 5234, Add MS 5253 and Add MS 5256.
