Author/compiler: Sōgi: 宗祇, renga poet, 1421-1502, from oral teaching handed on by Tō no Tsuneyori 東常緣, 1401-94.
Imprint: [Kyōto] , Fūgetsu Sōchi 風月宗智, Kan'ei 15, 1638. Kanki on last page (fol. 49b) of maki 6 reads: 寛永十五戊寅年仲秋吉辰 ／ 二條観音町風月宗智刋行.
Description: 6 kan, formerly in 8 satsu, now rebound in 1 vol. western style. (Maki 1) ff. 48; (2) ff. 39; (3) ff. 60; (4) ff. 68; (5) ff. 45; (6) ff. 49. 27.4 x 19.5 cm. Fukurotoji.
Blockprint. Printing frame 21.5 x 17.9 cm. (average). No borders. No fishtail design on hanshin.
Hiragana-majiri text in gyōsho script, with printed furigana. 11 lines to page, 18-24 characters to line.
Original vermilion front cover, embossed with a lozenge and floral design, of maki 1 only. Original printed title slip on left, with gedai: Kokin wakashū shō 1 古今和謌集抄一.
Title from naidai at head of each maki. Hashiragaki: Kokinshō 古今抄 + maki no. + folio no. In a western style half-leather binding.
Edition: The earliest printed edition, followed by only one reprint in Manji 2, 1659.
Contents: Explanatory commentary on the poems of the Kokinshū 古今集, arising from Tō no Tsuneyori's oral exposition of the 'secrets' of the anthology to the renga poet Iio Sōgi 飯尾宗祇 on two occasions (1st to 4th month and 6th to 7th month) in Bunmei 3 文明三年, 1471. An okugaki by Tsuneyori authenticating this transmission is printed on fol. 49b, maki 6, of the present edition.
