a 1: English note, ‘medical prescriptions against poisons and others', with large decorated ornament. a 2-26: Poda ni taoar, on medicine, and poda ni na hona rasun, on antidotes against poison. a 27-8: Blank. a 29: Drawing of the dragon Pane without text. a 30: Points of the compass. a 31-2: Blank. a 33: Glued to the cover. The chain of transmission at the beginning of side a is: Guru Manggaga in Pintu Bosi—the magician ‘here' in Poriaha (cf. Add. 4726).
b 1-10: Poda ni surat ni pagar tangkal setan, called pagar balik hontas na bolon, protective magic. Chain of transmission: Guru So Irnbangon Ni Aji—Guru Humu[n]tal Ni Aji of the clan Tambunan—Guru Tiang Ni Aji—Datu Geduk Ni Aji—his nephew Raja Parradum Ni Aji—Toga Ni Aji. b 10-14: Poda ni pagar pangambangi ni pagar sibalik hontas na bolon. b 15-17: Poda ni tabas ni porhas, exorcism against lightning. b 17-26: Poda ni pagar aji paguna na bolon, protective magic. b 27-32: Poda ni hata-hata sangketa na bolon, on curses.
In 1848 van der Tuuk examined MSS Batak 1-6 and wrote ‘A short account of the Batta manuscripts belonging to the Library of the East India Company', the autograph of which is in IOL; a preliminary draft (with the titles in Batak) is in Leiden Or 3395, pp. 135-40. The translations in the ‘Short account' are, of course, imperfect, given the state of knowledge of Batak at that time.

- When Prof. C. J. C. Reuvens of Leiden University visited the East India House in 1819 there were four Batak MSS, sent from Sumatra by a ‘Governor some 8 years earlier’ (see Leiden Or 8326); these are the present MSS Batak 2-5.
