Specimen of Batak writing
- Scope & Content:
-
A joint of bamboo.
A small piece of paper (originally) attached to it says ‘specimen of Batta writing, with a knife written and presented by J. Anderson, Esqr.'; this piece of paper is no longer present but a discoloured rectangle visible on the bamboo presumably indicated its location.
Containing on the left side (or the bottom) the Batak numbers from one to ten, put down by the King of Bunto Pane (this name is continually spelled ‘Munto Panei’ in Anderson, 1826) at the request of Anderson, on the right side (or the top), which is separated from the left (bottom) by a line, is a memorandum to Anderson (called Darsen) not to forget to send to the King of Bunto Pane two dogs from Penang.
See Anderson, 1826, p. 154, where this MS is mentioned.
In 1848 van der Tuuk examined MSS Batak 1-6 and wrote ‘A short account of the Batta manuscripts belonging to the Library of the East India Company', the autograph of which is in IOL; a preliminary draft (with the titles in Batak) is in Leiden Or 3395, pp. 135-40. The translations in the ‘Short account' are, of course, imperfect, given the state of knowledge of Batak at that time.
