Seven charts drawn in ink and watercolours, heightened in gold, made by Joanes Martines, a chart maker from Messina, possibly intended as a presentation piece. Each map is drawn on parchment on a double page opening. The first map is signed and dated: 'Joan martines en messina Añy 1582'. Several maps include elaborate compass roses and scales of distance, sometimes numbered.

Foliation: the charts are executed on a double opening, each of which is numbered in the upper right corner, 1 to 7. There are two unnumbered folios at the beginning and the end of the volume, making a total of 9 folios.

- The manuscripts of Sir Hans Sloane were purchased at his death from his executors by the Act of Parliament which established the British Museum in 1753.

- The Sloane Manuscripts were held by the British Museum Department of Manuscripts until 1973 after which they were transferred to the British Library.

[inserted, in pencil, ‘in folio’]' Follows a description of the subject of each map, on which the summary provided under 'scope and content' is based.
