Drawings of flowers and animals, attributed to Ellen Power
- Scope & Content:
-
Drawings, mostly of tulips, executed in a variety of techniques and attributed to Mrs Ellen Power (fl. 17th century). All drawings are executed on paper or cardboard, directly on the folios of the manuscript.
At the beginning of the manuscript (ff. 1-2) is an incomplete list of colours, along with shields each filled with a colour sample. Alongside each colour sample is an inscription in English explaining the colour recipe used.
Most drawings of tulips and irises are based on a series of prints by Johann Theodor de Bry, Florilegium Novum (Frankfurt, 1612). The British Library also has Hans Sloane's copy of De Bry's Florilegium Novum with the plates hand-coloured by the same Mrs Ellen Power (General Reference Collection 442.g.11). On ff. 41-55 are sketches of tulips on brown prepared paper. At the end of the volume, on ff.129-132 are drawings of animals, some of which are based on prints from Adriaen Collaert's series Avium vivae Icones (c. 1600).
