"Observationes Orchidum Etruscarum, a. 1714." Watercolours of orchids found in Tuscany, made by Bruno Tozzi
- Scope & Content:
- Watercolours of orchids found in Tuscany by Bruno Tozzi, introduced by a title page (f. 1) inscribed with the title in Latin "Observationes Orchidum Etruscarum A. 1714'" within an elaborate cartouche. On f. 2 is a dedication in Latin, dated January 1714, written by Bruno Tozzi, who explains that he has drawn the orchids himself from life and that the volume is dedicated to James Petiver, Fellow of the Royal Society in London. Interleaved between ff. 1-2 is a smaller leaf with notes on the drawings, in a different hand. On ff. 3-4 is a manuscript index with the names of the orchids shown in the volume. All watercolours are executed directly on the folios of the album, sometimes both recto and verso. Foliation is original.
