Watercolours of fish and crustaceans by Louis Renard
- Scope & Content:
-
A volume of watercolours of fish and crustaceans from the Moluccas [Maluku islands] made by French-born Louis Renard (c. 1678-1746), active in Amsterdam as book publisher, dealer and agent to the British Crown. An inscription in French at the beginning of the manuscript introduces the contents as 'Recueil des Poissons les plus remarquables, et des Ecrevisses et Crabbes de Mer et de terre. Par Louis Renard'.
The drawings are executed directly onto the folios of the album. The name of each fish is written in Dutch next to the drawing. The drawings are numbered progressively and this number connects each drawing to a longer manuscript description in French on the folio facing the drawing. The drawings are likely based on sketches done by the Dutch artist Samuel Fallours, who was stationed at Ambon as soldier for the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in the early 18th century. These watercolours were later used as the basis for Renard's book, Poissons, Ecrevisses et crabes, de diverses couleurs et figures extraordinaires, que l'on trouve autour des isles Moluques et sur les cotes des terres Australes (Amsterdam,1719 first ed.) published with hand-coloured copperplate engravings.
Letters written by Louis Renard in Amsterdam to Hans Sloane in 1718 concerning the future publication of Renard's work on fish are preserved in Sloane MS 4045, ff. 160-161 and ff. 170-171.
