- Title:
- Standards, flags and arms of the companies of Robert Devereux, 3rd Earl of Essex's army
- Scope & Content:
- Watercolour drawings of the flags and arms of the companies of Robert Devereux (1591-1646), 3rd Earl of Essex's Parliamentary army, as well as of the Scottish and Irish forces, from the time of the English Civil War and the resulting Commonwealth. The drawings are executed directly on the folios of the manuscript. They are preceded by a title page with a watercolour drawing of a multitude of flags and standards, and the word 'Cornetes' inscribed in golden letters at the centre against a blue field. The drawings on f. 30v and f. 137 bear the dates 1642 and 1646 respectively. The volume is unfinished, with some arms towards the back of the volume being only sketched in pencil, other folios left entirely blank. A manuscript index to the album listing the names of the members of the Earl's army is placed at the end of the volume.
