- Title:
- Watercolours of plants, flowers and fruit, made by Mr Guyot
- Scope & Content:
-
Watercolours of plants, flowers and fruit made by a Frenchman, Mr Guyot. The watercolours are executed directly onto the folios of the manuscript and are framed by a washline. There are some unfinished sketches in pencil. The name of the plant is inscribed in French, Latin and sometimes Greek. The inscription also includes a cross-reference to botanical atlases, among others the works by Matthias de l'Obel, Carolus Clusius, Gaspar Bauhin and Rembert Dodoens.
At the end of the manuscript, two letters addressed to 'Mr Gailhard at Mr Philips in Crown Court Charts Street Westminster' written in French by Henri Justel (1620-93), FRS and librarian to Charles II and James II. The addressee is likely Jean Gailhard (fl. 1659-1708), an author and tutor. Justel's first letter (f. iv) refers to his willingness to sell the album of watercolour plants to Gailhard. Justel's second letter (f. vi) mentions one Mr Guyot as the author of the drawings.
