- Title:
- [Letter from Kaymakam to Richard, Seventh Earl of Cavan]
- Scope & Content:
-
This volume contains a letter from the Kaymakam to the Commander-in-Chief at Alexandria, Richard, Seventh Earl of Cavan, at the time he was in command of the British Army in Egypt, after the departure of Lord Hutchinson in October 1801.
The writer says that it has been impossible for Lord Elgin to leave İstanbul because of the conference taking place there, but that the Chief Secretary of the British Embassy is about to travel to Egypt. He deplores unfortunate occurrences which have interfered with the friendly relations between the British and Ottoman armies, and avers that the British have misunderstood the reasons for which certain Beys have been honoured and have wrongly thought that it was because these latter individuals were opposing them. The Beys who were rebellious and have been a source of trouble for the British are to be sent by sea for internment in İstanbul. Compensation will be paid to them for their possessions left in Egypt.
The letter is undated, but was likely written in the early 19th century CE.
