- Title:
- A letter appealing for aid ahead of a family's emigration to Nova Scotia
- Scope & Content:
- An autograph appeal for aid from an unknown woman, describing herself as "an anxious mother", ahead of a family emigration to "the inclement, almost arctic, region of Nova Scotia". The appeal asks the public for donations to be sent to the author’s home address ('29 Colby Road' [Gipsy Hill, London]). She is particularly looking for fur coats, fur hats, and blankets as "the parents are unable to provide the necessary articles." She also states that a perambulator and washing machine would be useful while assuring donors of anonymity. This appeal was likely drafted for publication as a local newspaper notice. At the head of the item is a small drawing of a family - seven children in a row and an eighth in a cradle; she refers to a "large family of infants." The writer was possibly the wife of Edward Keogh, a disgraced barrister who lived at 29 Colby Road who was made bankrupt in 1888, leading to the possibility that the appeal was some form of scam.
