A collection of poems in Dutch, followed by watercolours of insects
- Scope & Content:
-
A series of poems (ff. 1-35) written in pen and brown ink in Dutch, directly on the folios of the manuscript, both recto and verso. Some of the poems are dated at specific points in time between 1679 and 1683 and indicated as written in Rotterdam. Topics of the poems include death and commemoration, religion, acrostics based on the names of persons and riddles. On f. 19 r-v are two poems dedicated to the author's wife, Martha Breggers. On f. 29 r-v are two poems written on the occasion of the author's 40th birthday on 5 February 1682, signed with the monogram 'PVS'. According to archival documents in Rotterdam City Archive, one Martha Breggers was married to Pieter Verschuer, both living in Rotterdam and members of the Remonstrant Brotherhood. The monogram PVS is possibly that of Pieter Verschuer.
On ff. 36-51 are small watercolours of insects that the author of the poems has found in his garden. A short note near each drawing specifies the time and place of the observation. The drawings are all dated between 1682 and 1687. The rest of the manuscript is blank.
