Description: 10 kan, formerly in 5 satsu, now rebound in 1 vol. western style. (Maki 1) ff. 6 (1st and 2nd jo 序), 2 (3rd jo 序), 1 (4th jo 序), 5 (総論), 2 (目録), 7 (書題), 15 (本文) ; (maki 2) ff. 25; (3) ff. 28; (4) ff. 21; (5) ff. 30; (6) ff. 20; (7) ff. 25; (8) ff. 24; (9) ff. 50; (10) ff. 15, 2 (跋). 28.1 x 19.9 cm. Fukurotoji.
Movable type, except for 2nd preface (ff. 5-6) which is blockprinted. Printing frame 20.1 x 6.8 cm. (average). Single-line borders all round. No vertical rules. 'Flower petal' fishtail design on hanshin.
Kanbun text, with some katakana kunten and kaeriten added by hand in early-Edo period. 10 lines to page (text 本文), 20 lines to page (commentary 註), 16 characters to line, apart from 1st preface (6 lines to page, 10 characters to line) and batsu 跋 (6 lines to page, 8 characters to line).
Original grey front cover of satsu 1 and back cover of satsu 5, within a western style half-leather binding. Original printed title slip of satsu 1, with gedai: 小學大全一. Hashiragaki: Shōgaku taizen maki 1 (etc.) 小學大全巻一 (等) + folio no.
Edition: The only movable type edition of this work. The 2-folio blockprinted 2nd preface, 小學集觧序 is thought to be modelled on an earlier Korean edition. The batsu following maki 10 contains the date 弘治乙丑 (1505).
Contents: Text of the Xiaoxue 小學, with explanatory commentary by Wu Ne 呉訥. Additional notes by Chen Xuan 陳選, Ming period.

Condition: Good, apart from minor worm damage (some repaired) and brown discoloration in lower margin. Book cropped at upper edge.
Impression: Sharp and clear, with little evidence of type wear.
Seals of ownership: Oblong red seal, Kaguraoka Tani-shi 神楽岡谷氏, on first page of maki 2, 4, 6 and 9. Two square black seals, 高古 and 仁保氏印 (printed inkoku) on mikaeshi of back cover.
Manuscript notes: Short inscription (late-Edo period) on mikaeshi reads: 日群山下 / 岳杜櫜. Manuscript kunten already noted above.
