- Scope & Content:
-
Encyclopaedic work on cosmology by Zakarīyā ibn Muḥammad ibn Maḥmūd al-Qazwīnī (زكريا بن محمد بن محمود القزويني, d. 1283), without illustrations. The copy was completed on Friday 11 Dhū al-Ḥijjah 827/4 November 1424 by the scribe Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Irbilī (محمد بن محمد بن الإربلي, see colophon, f. 162r, lines 14-17).
Contents
• Preface (ff. 3v-5r);
• Introductions (المقدمات, ff. 5r-9r);
• Contents list (فهرست, ff. 9r-10v);
• Chapter one: On celestial things (المقالة الأولى في العلويات, ff. 10v-38r);
• Chapter two: On sublunary things (المقالة الثانية في السفليات, ff. 38v-160v);
• Conclusion (خاتمة الكتاب, ff. 160v-162r).
The margins of the present volume contain numerous notes, glosses, anecdotes and diagrams, many in Ottoman Turkish and Farsi, in addition to Arabic, not all relating to the text they occur next to. These include:
• A note written by an owner or user of the copy, recording the death of their daughter, Bilqīs, on the night of Friday, 24 Rabī' I 1089/16 May 1678, just as the evening adhān was called (f. 1r);
• Observations on geographical, topological and climatic phenomena (ff. 1r-2r, 13r, 42r, and 72v);
• A text on the talismanic images associated with each degree (درجات) of the signs of the zodiac, reportedly taken from the 4th faṣl of The Hidden Secret (السر المكتوم) by Fakhr al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar al-Rāzī (فخر الدين محمد بن عمر الرازي, d. 1210, ff. 9v-11v);
• Notes on historical occurrences of solar and lunar eclipses with dates in the 16th and 17th centuries (f. 10v) and sketches of astronomical phenomena (ff. 11r and 23r-26v);
• An alphabetical inventory of terms 'in the language of Ni'mat Allāh' (من لغت نعمت الله) [i.e. Persian], possibly referring to the Sufi poet Ni’mat Allāh Valī (نعمت الله ولي, d. 1431, ff. 13r-23v);
• Calendrical computations (ff. 30v-31r);
• Inventories of pharmaceutical ingredients and preparations (ff. 63r-74v, 93r, and 107v-117v);
• Alchemical and talismanic preparations and notes (ff. 88r-88v); magic squares (أوفاق) and related verses (162r-163r).
Begins (f. 3v, lines 1-4):
Ends (f. 162r, lines 10-12):
Colophon (f. 162r, lines 12-21):
