- Title:
- al-Ishārah ilá ‘ilm al-ʿibārah الإشارة إلى علم العبارة
Sālimī, Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad سالمي، محمد بن أحمد
- Scope & Content:
-
A manual on dream interpretation in fifty sections (باب), by Abū ‘Abd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Sālimī ibn ‘Umar al-Sālimī (أبو عبد الله محمد بن أحمد السالمي بن عمر السالمي, d. 1398). The copy was completed in the evening of 13 Muḥarram 855/14 February 1451 by the scribe ‘Īd ibn Muhannā’ ibn ‘Umar ibn Kuḥlī al-Shāfi'ī, from the province of Karak [modern-day Jordan] (عيد بن مهناء بن عمرو بن كحلي من معاملة الكرك المحروس الشافعي, see colophon, f. 126r, lines 4-8, transcribed below).
Al-Sālimī's text cites the lost Code of Dream Interpretation (دستور في التعبير), by Abū Isḥāq al-Kirmānī (أبو اسحاق الكرماني, fl 775-785), as mentioned in a note on f. 1r. The semi-legendary oneirocritic Ibn Sīrīn (ابن سيرين, died 728 or 729) is also cited.
Folios 1a-3 are replacements, while the main (angular and neat) scribal hand is replaced by another less accomplished hand on 15 folios (ff. 7-8; 10-13; 15-16; 18-19; 84-86 [gap in text on f. 86v]; and 95-96). A prayer written underneath the colophon, apparently in the main scribe's hand, invokes blessings upon the volume's two scribes (لمن كتباه), indicating that the 15 folios were part of the original copying of the volume (f. 126r, lines 13-15).
Begins (f. 1av, lines 2-6):
Ends (f. 125v, line 16-f. 126r, line 2):
ورؤيا
جاء رجل إلى ابن سيرين فقال رأيت في النوم كأني أنبشر عظام النبي صلى الله
عليه وسلم فقال أنت رجل تحيي سنته صلى الله عليه وسلم...
Colophon (f. 126r, lines 2-12):
