- The manuscripts of Sir Hans Sloane were purchased at his death from his executors by the Act of Parliament which established the British Museum in 1753.
- Source of Acquisition:
- The Sloane Manuscripts were held by the British Museum Department of Manuscripts until 1973 after which they were transferred to the British Library.
- Finding Aids:
- Catalogue of Additional Manuscripts, vol. 20 (1831), available in the Manuscripts Reading Room, where the volume is described as: 'A case containing Five [crossed out and above it, written in pencil, ‘various’] Rolls, viz. 1.A view of Constantinople, more than 15 feet in length & 172ft in width, executed in water colours, by Hofsted Van Essen. 2. A view of the City of Pekin, in China, by a German Artist, in water colors, measuring 7ft 9in in length by 172ft in width. 3. Plan of St. James’s Square, London."
