Drawings of amphibians and reptiles by Eleazar Albin and others
- Scope & Content:
-
Drawings of reptiles and amphibians executed in a variety of techniques, primarily watercolour, pencil, ink and chalk. The only exceptions are items 21 and 60, which are etchings. Various drawings bear inscriptions in English, some of which are abbreviated cross-references to James Petiver's Gazophylacium Naturae et Artis (1702-11).
Summary description of contents:
1-9. Watercolours of turtles.
10. Pen and ink drawing of an Indian bat with measurements, signed by Robert Hooke and dated 25 May 1699.
12. Watercolour of frogs, signed by Eleazar Albin and dated 1712.
14. Watercolour of a frog in four positions, perhaps an exact copy after Jacques II de Gheyn's drawing with the same subject in the Rijksmuseum (RP-T-1898-A-4036).
16-28. Pencil and watercolour drawings of various reptiles, among which item 19 is signed 'H. B. fe[cit]' (possibly the Dutch artist Anton Henstenburg). Item 20 is a watercolour of a lizard and butterfly by George Edwards. The wings of the butterfly include scales removed from the insect, then transferred onto paper and coated with a thin layer of glue.
21. Etching printed à la poupée of a lizard, by Johannes Teyler. Another impression is in the British Museum (1871,1209.5176).
29-50. Pencil and watercolour drawings of lizards and other reptiles.
51-59. Drawings of various snakes.
60. Etching of parts of the skeleton of a snake.
