- Title:
- [Preface to the Divan-i Lami'i]
- Scope & Content:
-
This volume contains Lami'i Çelebi's preface to his own Divan.Lami'i Çelebi was also known as Osman İbn-i Ali (died 938 AH/1531-32 CE) and was born in Bursa. This text is also found in Or 10882, an autograph of the Divan, on ff 2v-31r.
The author expounds his views on the art of poetry, writing in ornate rhymed prose liberally interspersed with quotations from Hafız, Cami, and other poets, Ottoman Turkish verses of his own, Qur'anic verses, and other items.
Although the present volume follows the text of Or 10882, it is interesting that after the phrase (f 30r) 'Eğerçe kim bu safine-yi letaif / ve mecmua-yi maarif,' the words 'yok yok / bu sahayıf-ı zaharif', which should follows, have been omitted here.
On f 30r, we learn that although Lami'i finished the work, and perhaps the final revision of his Divan, in 936 AH (1529-30 CE), because of the slowness of the scribes of his day, he was not able to check and pronounce it complete until the next year.
Some verses have been added to the margins of the text .
There are two diagrams of astrolabes on the endpapers.
This manuscript contains no colophon, but it was likely copied in the latter half of the 17th century CE.
